Pharmaceutical track and trace systems have rapidly evolved beyond regulatory compliance tools to become strategic enablers of operational efficiency, supply chain transparency, and product integrity. With increasing complexity in serialization requirements, data integration, and emerging tech applications—from blockchain to AI—the technical demands on serialization infrastructure continue to grow. This panel brings together experts to explore the latest advancements and unresolved technical hurdles in the deployment. Panelists will exchange lessons learned from global rollouts, discuss data architecture evolution, and assess how TrackTS is intersecting with broader digitalization agendas in manufacturing and distribution. The following will be discussed:
Klaus Egner studied physics at the TU Darmstadt. After graduating with a degree in engineering, he trained technical business economist while working. Since 1998, Mr. Egner has been working for Merck KGaA, initially in the Automation department, where he was responsible for laboratories and in the field of chemistry. In 2004, his area of responsibility changed to the pharmaceuticals division with different areas of support (MES, production and packaging solids). In 2011, the implementation of Track & Trace in the packaging sector became step-by-step his main focus. Since Aug. 2019, he has been responsible for Track & Trace in packaging in a global function at Merck Healthcare KGaA.
The Pop in Your Job: I like digging deep into technical complexity to understand finally the full picture and making things operational. Learning about the interaction of technical and multi stakeholder based complexity provides an interesting extra layer for me.
Jyrki Syväri, Pharmacist and Chemist, made his PhD Theses in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and his Diploma in Chemistry in Analytical Chemistry. He joined Boehringer Ingelheim to become a Project Manager in Operations. He was responsible for the worldwide launches of new products, such as Metalyse and Spiriva. Thereafter he was heading a group called “Launch and Special Supplies”. In this function he was responsible for setting up supply chains for Boehringer Ingelheim’s new products. New Supply Chain paradigms and concepts fell also under his responsibility. In this context he became the world-wide program leader for BI’s Product Safety & Security project that centres around serialization. Additionally, Jyrki is leading the global initiative Supply Chain Integrity which takes a broader view on supply chain security, transparency and Risk Management.
